Games and Patterns

We played a "what's next?" game in k math, and the children created patterns, then covered up the last bit, and we had to guess what was under each cup. It wasn't easy! But once we understood the concept, it was fun to challenge our friends to figuring out what was hiding. We continued to construct paper and glue patterns, and talk about all sorts of patterns together.

and more patterns!

sharing the patterns we made!

weaving with paper...it's all about patterns

We continue to look at, think about, and practice patterns in kmath. The children have been creating patterns with stamps, blocks, and paper and pen. We play "can you do this?" pattern games and the children try to follow a 3 or 4 motion pattern with me. When we read stories, we talk about what comes next, according to the pattern in the story. Soon we'll be "recording" our patterns to share them, as well as breaking patterns according to their units.

Patterns!

We began our pattern unit this week with a pattern walk, searching out the patterns that we see throughout our world. The children were able to record a number of different patterns and used many creative ways to record...drawing the shapes, writing first letters of the word, and making patterns with their patterns. We began some pattern making activities in free choice time, and will continue to investigate patterns for a while. We talk about patterns as helping us to predict what comes next. We played a "what's missing" game, to practice looking closely and remembering. When you look at the photos, make sure to notice the engagement and interest! We had a great week.
Until Next Time,
Michele

Ordering By Number Size

comparing lengths

writing the number 5

comparing length and number

this was a number hunt game...the numbers were each at the end of a long piece of yarn, winding in and out and under, and when all the numbers were found we put them in backwards order and counted down....

ordering numbers 1 through 12!

This week the children read the book The Napping House and spent time creating a poster with all of the different characters, and then counting up all of the eyes, ears, legs, paws, noses, and mouths. We looked at counting, length, and number order in games such as comparing the lengths of four names made with cube towers, counting up handfuls of cubes and making towers and then putting them in order, and coloring and writing numbers on pumpkins and putting them in our own order. We will soon be looking at patterns, and comparisons of length and number fit nicely into this sequence of math thinking!
