collecting data and taking surveys

This week we learned about data. We drew a picture of our lunches, and chose our favorite item from our lunch, then shared with the group and decided how to group our data. We talked about what we can find out from data; how many people all together collected the data, how many like sweet things, and how many like other foods. From our lunch data we moved on to taking surveys. We came up with an original survey question: some samples were "do you like sunshine?" and "do you like cats?" and "do you like writing?" and with our yes/no chart we polled our classmates, the teachers, and  faculty and pre-k children. When we had enough responses, we counted up how many yes and no's. The questions were so positive that "no's" were rather infrequent. The poll takers were surprised, though, that someone did not like cats.

Numbers Add Up

We solved a number problem together and showed how we found the answer this week. The children shared their answers with each other as they restated the number problem.

We used white boards and colored beans  in a group to find out how many ways we could make "6".

and, finally, we learned "how many eyes" or, skip counting, by making a chart of our eyes and comparing the numbers we found.

Numbers Get Complicated!

when we hand out number cards, the children figure out if they have all the numbers, and what's missing.

This week was about numbers and functions. We had many opportunities to write numbers, add or subtract numbers, and play some old favorite games like racing bears. The children were asked to work in partners, which can be a challenge when there are a number of tasks to organize. We had some great success!

Until Next Time,
Michele

this game was a complicated choosing, recording, subtracting and recording game.....
