Numbers Are More Than 1,2,3......

We worked with numbers this week, playing BINGO with numbers 1-20, ordering number cards 0-10, and figuring out how to order various numbers. We practiced measuring "length" with a tower of 10 cubes.  We've finished writing in our number books the numbers 1-10, and the children are so proud of their work!

Taking Inventory and Working With a Partner

We learned about taking inventories this week, and why someone might need to count up how many altogether of any given object (teachers needing pencils for everyone, bakers needing cookies, etc.). The children worked by themselves, counting up the items in a bag and making a representation of their inventory on a page, and then we tried working with a partner. When we talked about partner work, the children said that having a partner made the work easier because each person had a job, and the counting could be double checked.

When the children reported on their work they continued to be collaborative, checking with each other as they described their work.

Until Next Time,
Michele

(There was one group of three, which worked hard to make sure each person had a turn to count!)

The Napping House

We read The Napping House this week, and then created a picture of the scene JUST BEFORE the alert flea starts the waking up process in the house. We have begun to count up the objects and attributes in the picture together. We also had the opportunity to share our counting books with the PreK classroom. We were a big hit! I asked the K's what they had taught the preK children, and they readily said "Counting to 6!" "Numbers!" and "Counting!"

Number Sense and Counting Books

We read Anno's Counting Book, a beautifully rendered book that has many details for children to find regarding the numbers 1 through 12. We read our counting books to the first graders, and they read their shape books to us. Sharing our work gives us a sense of completion and pride and is very motivating!

These children were working while they were waiting!

Sorting Ourselves by Attributes

shoes with laces
We worked to group ourselves by one similarity this week. After a few examples by the teachers, the children grasped the concept and were able to make groups according to one similarity or attribute.

We answer yes or no questions about ourselves to take attendance.

The counting jar is an independent activity that requires counting up the number of objects in the jar, recording the number, and recording your name on a sticky note.
