Exploring Shapes

We continue to use shapes to create, trace, tell stories, and play. The children have learned that shapes make up everything, and are challenged to make pictures with shapes that they combine. We are working to make a colorful mural of the sand, sea, and sky!

A New Unit; Geometry!

We have begun a new unit in kindergarten math; the study of shapes both 2D and 3D. We made books about shapes by creating pictures with glue and cut out shapes and filling in the blanks: A ___________is a _______________until you add_________________and then it's a _____________________. For instance, "A rectangle is a rectangle until you add squares, circles, and a door that opens, and then it's a bus."

We continue to play with pattern blocks, but now we are thinking about the shapes that they can make and how we can record our favorites. We also work to fill in puzzle shapes with blocks. There are many solutions, which we find interesting!
Until Next Time,
Michele

Pattern Museum

We finished off our pattern unit with an impromptu "museum." The children were docents and explained their patterns to the many visitors. The prek classroom, first graders, and many faculty and staff came to admire our work. We were very proud of ourselves! Until next Time, Michele
