We Show What We Know!

We talked about congruent sides this week, and the children tried to find shapes that matched perfectly to one side of another shape. To round out our geometry unit, we constructed a "shape quilt" that combined all of our knowledge about shapes being units of a whole as well as feeding our creative spirit. The children helped to calculate how many squares were needed for each child (8) to have six squares, and as motivation we read a book about a quilt being made by favorite pieces of clothing. Each child designed six squares, and we combined groups of six to make a huge paper quilt. We had to have a few conversations of parts of a whole, as each child really wants to take their pieces home.
We also created a shape riddle flap book, and the children drew their favorite shape, then composed a riddle to describe their shape. We are going to read our riddles to the first graders and see if they know what our favorite shapes are!
this activity involved copying a structure with cubes that was pre-made

2-D and 3-D Geometry

This week, we learned that there were many ways to make a hexagon shape from the pattern block shapes.

We explored 3-D shapes, in free play, with a 3-D shape hunt, and an informal "interview" complete with microphones.

So, cube (or whatever shape you are holding in your hand), how does it feel to be a cube? Do you have straight lines or curved lines? How many sides do you have? How many corners? Do you look like anything else? What could you be a part of?

Until next time,

Geometry in Motion!

We looked at shapes as "building blocks" of our world, and made a mural using pictures we created from shape cut outs. We also practiced putting shapes together as puzzles, and learned that there might be many different ways to create the same puzzle. Some of the mathematical concepts that we are working with include developing language to describe and compare 2-D shapes and their attributes, relating 2-D shapes to real world objects, and describing shapes by their attributes. We also compose and decompose 2-D shapes, and explore mathematical materials.

Here We Are, Geometry

Our introduction to geometry included books with shapes, combining shapes to make new shapes, and talking about shapes. We wrote a book about shapes, and read each page to the group. We made intricate shapes on the geoboards with rubber bands. The children are working to learn the names of each shape and to make their own shapes with lines and tracing shapes.
Until Next Time,
Michele
we share what we notice about each shape
