We continue to explore our numbers, and practice with combining numbers, counting, and solving story problems. The kindergartners are focused, able to complete a page of work, and independent in their thinking. As they solve problems, they can show each step with pictures or sound spelling or writing their numbers. Exciting times in kindergarten!

Counting is More Than 1,2,3!
This week we looked at designs of numbers of tiles that followed rules, such as "whole sides touching." The children created their own designs, and then we worked to group and count the tiles together. We started an inventory unit, as well, in which we count groups of things and combine them to make a whole number.

What's the Time?
We looked at clocks, telling time, and the concepts of time this week. The children learned such concepts as "clockwise," "o'clock," "big hand" and "little hand," and other basic telling time language to build upon as they get older. One child queried "does time still go at night?" A favorite was our version of "What's the Time, Mr. Wolf!" which was an active way to practice the passage of time. We also made "compasses," thinking about directions on a circle and an arrow. The children are excited to have a say in their math learning, and I'm sure that there will be a new topic or two discussed next week!

Story Problems and Solutions!
We wrote story problems and illustrated them, and we're ready to "quiz" the first graders! We've had an interesting few days of making up stories, acting them out, and deciding how we can come up with a solution. Combine? Take away? and how do we write that?
