We have begun to look at collecting data, or gathering information that will tell us something. When I asked the children "What will someone know if they look at our eye chart?" some of the answers were "how many eyes in the classroom" and "what color our eyes are." We talked about "skip counting" and discovered that there are more eyes than children in our room, and when we drew pictures of our families and counted up body parts like fingers and toes the numbers got really big! We drew our self portraits, and will use them to group ourselves by similar attributes.

This Week in Numbers
This was a week for finding out how many combinations of numbers could make six or five. There was more than one answer, which was interesting for all of us to discover. We are working on being partners and combining our efforts to create one answer. It's surprisingly difficult, but with some practice the children are getting better and better at it. We tossed chips and graphed the results, we combined number cards to make "6" and learned that 1 and 1 and 4 could make six.

Numbers and Story Problems
The kindergartners composed their own story problems this week. Some chose to write their own words with sound spelling, some chose to narrate their story, have it written, and copy it and illustrate their story. Wonderful work!

Numbers and Story Problems
The kindergartners are learning about number sentences and combining and taking away groups of things. We told some story problems together and wrote the number sentences with pictures. We continue to practice writing our numbers and playing number games that involve combining groups to make a whole.
Until next time,
